What is a Lab Grown Diamond?

In an industry that has remained stubbornly unchanged for centuries, the world of diamonds is finally witnessing a remarkable transformation with the emergence of lab grown diamonds. While often mistaken as mere imitations or stimulants, these lab grown diamonds are, in fact, on par with their mined counterparts. Unlike substitutes such as cubic zirconia or moissanite, lab grown diamonds share identical chemical and physical properties with mined diamonds. The only distinction lies in their origins; while lab grown diamonds are cultivated in controlled laboratory environments, taking only 6 to 10 weeks to develop, mined diamonds form in the Earth over the course of millions of years.

Surrounded by myths and misconceptions, lab grown diamonds have faced an uphill battle in gaining recognition. But at The Diamond Lab, we believe in the benefits of buying lab grown and we're passionate about educating our customers so that they can make their own correctly informed choices.

How Are Lab Grown Diamonds Made?

Lab-grown diamonds are crafted using either the High-Pressure, High-Temperature (HPHT) method or the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method.

The HPHT method replicates the intense heat and pressure conditions found deep within the Earth's mantle. A diamond seed is placed in a carbon-rich environment and subjected to extreme heat and pressure. This process causes the carbon to crystallize around the seed, resulting in a lab grown diamond. However, this process also causes these diamonds to be exposed to a multitude of elements like nitrogen and boron, which can result in a yellowish hue and metallic inclusions that can lead to magnetism. This over-exposure can also often cause HPHT diamonds to also not read as a real diamond with a diamond tester, making them a much less appealing choice when it comes to lab grown diamonds options.

On the other hand, the CVD process mimics the formation of diamonds in interstellar gas clouds. A diamond seed is placed in a vacuum chamber filled with carbon-rich gases and heated to extremely high temperatures. These gases transform into plasma, releasing carbon atoms that form a layer on the diamond seed, gradually growing the diamond. CVD diamonds are typically colorless, non-magnetic, and exhibit minimal fluorescence - ultimately yielding colorless diamonds without impurities. At The Diamond Lab, we exclusively embrace the CVD method for all of our diamonds.

What Are the Benefits of Lab Grown Diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds present an excellent environmentally friendly alternative to traditional mining. They significantly reduce the carbon footprint that normally comes hand in hand with the diamond industry by eliminating heavy machinery and the use of fossil fuels, drastically lower the water consumption required, spare land habitats from disruption, and also contribute to reduced waste. Because of this, lab grown diamonds are recognized for their sustainability, being both conflict-free and eco-friendly. Beyond environmental benefits, lab grown diamonds also offer economic advantages, allowing for larger, higher quality diamond purchases on the same budget. The controlled environment in which they form allows for more efficient diamond cutting, minimizing material waste and ensuring high-quality diamonds. Choosing lab-grown diamonds reflects a commitment to ethical and environmentally responsible practices, without compromising on elegance and craftsmanship.
